Southeast Ohio Regional Job Fair set for April

RIO GRANDE — OhioMeansJobs will be holding its annual Southeast Ohio Regional Job Fair at the University of Rio Grande Lyne Center Gymnasium from 10 a.m. to 2 pm. April 6 in partnership with Gallia Job and Family Services and the Gallia Economic Development Office.

According to Gallia Economic Development Director Melissa Clark, the partnership tries to hold a job fair every year or every other year.

“With the announcement of Kmart closing, there obviously became a need,” said Clark. “There were about 50 employees to be displaced. So we got together and we felt the need to do a job fair. Normally, we do them in the fall but we decided to do it in the spring.”

The event was eventually moved to the Lyne Center location because it outgrew the previous location. Gallia organizers had previously partnered with surrounding county services and have had up to 60 employers appear at fairs.

This year, Clark said currently 43 employers have applied to commit to the fair. The deadline for employers seeking to apply to the fair is April 1. Employers can sign up at growgallia.com/jobfair.

“We’re encouraging job seekers to also preregister, that way we’re able to capture some of their information,” said Clark. “Everyone is going to have to register so when they come it will save them some time and we’ll have their information and they won’t have to wait in line. If we have future job fair events, we’ll email anyone that’s registered before and we remind them to come and bring their resume if there is anything they are looking for.”

“We hope to invite everyone in the community,” said Gallia Job and Family Services Director Dana Glassburn. “All are welcome.”

According to OhioMeansJobs.com jobs posted online outlooks between December and January, top job ad occupations in the southeast Ohio were led by first-line supervisors of retail sale workers with 503 ads, heavy and tractor-trailer trucker drivers with 474 ads, retail salespersons with 228 ads, registered nurses with 210, light truck or delivery drivers with 157, first-line supervisors of food preparation and serving workers had 147, stock clerks had 109, cashiers had 88, licenses practical and vocational nurses had 80 and maintenance and repair workers had 78.
